Located in the heart of the Caribbean, at the Eastern end of the Canarreos Archipelago, Cayo Largo del Sur is a little bit of paradise. Its beautiful coral reefs, which are relatively close to the surface, provide refuge for a great variety offish, which makes this an ideal place for snorkeling. Nature went all out when. it created this shallow area near an almost vertical break in the ocean wall, where you can see a wealth of sponges and large fishes.
The key offers excellent conditions for fishing, scuba diving and live-aboard. Excursions and seafaris set out from here to nearby Cayo Rico, whose banks of molluscs are a special attraction; Cayo Iguana, the natural habitat of hundreds of reptiles that look like mini-dinosaurs; Quinto Canal, an enormous sandbank surrounded by clean, shallow water. These are only some of the sites of impressive beauty close to the key. The marina has two international scuba-diving centres-Playa Sirena and Cayo Largo-that offer scuba-diving classes at all levels, with internationally recognized certificates.
The key has 25 kilometres (15.5 miles) of virgin beaches (whose extremely white sand never gets too hot) and tiny neighbouring keys where you can charge your batteries from the powerful life force of Nature. Here, you can go fishing with full gear or just mask, fins and snorkel or go on group excursions in a motorboat.
